Hopeful policy changes…

The Oneis apparently re-thinking some of his policies regarding the war on terror.  During his glorious campaign he promised to close Gitmo and give the detainees real trials in U.S. courts.

But now comes word from un-named sources that The One is in deep contemplation over what he should do about Gitmo.

“Now, as Mr. Obama moves closer to assuming responsibility for Guantánamo, his pledge to close the detention center is bringing to the fore thorny questions under consideration by his advisers. They include where Guantánamo’s detainees could be held in this country, how many might be sent home and a matter that people with ties to the Obama transition team say is worrying them most: What if some detainees are acquitted or cannot be prosecuted at all?”

Deep contemplation indeed.  The Oneis a great and powerful thinker, which obviously means that he will be a great and powerful leader, right?  And if The One is reconsidering the fate of Gitmo, well, hey, we have just got to trust him.  Although, I must admit that this quote scares the crap out of me:

“You can’t be a purist and say there’s never any circumstance in which a democratic society can preventively detain someone,” said one civil liberties lawyer, David D. Cole, a Georgetown law professor who has been a critic of the Bush administration.

Most likely it scares the crap out of me because the guy says “someone” not “terrorists” or “foreign nationals” or “al-qaeda” or some other thing that wouldn’t leave me open to the idea that he’s talking about Betty Smith from Topeka who just happens to write a letter to the editor criticizing The One.

The One is also pondering the intrrogation techniqes used by the CIA.  During his glorious campaign he had promised to bring an end to the Bush torture policy, but now that is getting some deep thinking too.
